In the early 1970's, Dr. Robert Dunton opened the Del Prado Veterinary Hospital on the east side of Cape Coral on Del Prado Boulevard. In 1987 Dr. Dunton contemplated moving his practice to the western side of Cape Coral, and decided to build a two story, free-standing facility on Chiquita Boulevard. Prior to his veterinary career, Dr. Dunton served in the United States Army. As a veteran he began a hobby of collecting military vehicles. As a matter of fact, the design of the new hospital accommodated for the storage of his military vehicles! Two years later the construction was completed, and he sold the Del Prado property and moved his practice to the new western location. The practice was situated on the first floor of the hospital, and he renamed his practice Chiquita Animal Hospital.
In 1999, Dr. Dunton decided to retire and he sold the practice to Dr. John Kacoyanis (clients and staff members refer to him as Dr. "K"!) This was a large endeavor for Dr. Kacoyanis as he had been practicing in the state of Maine.
During the first year, Dr. K worked diligently to get to know his clients and patients and expanded the services of the hospital. Dr. K wasted no time putting his own mark on the practice, and within a year after ownership, the hospital was renovated to maximize the first floor space. The large garage space in the back of the building was converted to our present kennel area, allowing an expansion to seven exam rooms and a larger pharmacy area.
As the practice grew, the need for more space was imminent. In 2004, Hurricane Charley completed decimated the second floor of the building. This was the catalyst for an expansion of the hospital to the second floor. In 2007, the renovation was complete and 3 dental stations, 2 surgical suites, a surgical kennel, an ultrasonography room, and the doctors' office were introduced.
